Venus Fly Trap Varieties

People immediately think of the Venus Fly trap went they hear about carnivorous plants. While it is easily regarded as having one of the most amazing prey catching abilities, it’s not my quite on my top list of carnivorous plant.

I do like the different cultivated varieties that have been produced to bring out different characteristics of each. The above is a Big Mouth variety. Bright red mouths with a green leaves. Mature traps can grow to about 2 inches.

Below is a Cupped form. The traps are fused on sides to and curve inward to form more of a cup type trap.

Cup Traps

Different colors make the ordinary everyday new again. Here is a Pink Fly Trap Variety.

Other types include:

  • Yellow
  • Different Teeth types
  • Different types of Reds
  • Double Traps

Carnivorous Stowaways

When receiving plants a lot of times you find stowaway plants in the same pot. They might be grasses or weeds, but sometimes you find bonus plants along for the ride!


The most common type of weed-like carnivorous plant might be some species of drosera. Here is what I think is a Spatulata that just sprouted out of nowhere!
